Fix or Buy? A Question always asked...

The question comes to us all the time here at MinnDak Computers.

Should I invest my money into fixing my computer or is am I better off buying a new computer?

It's a great question, and my team is trained to ask the question, "What would I do if it were my computer?"

The question is not always a simple one; so we want to assess a few things about how your use your system.

How the computer system(s) are being used?

Do you use it for basic Internet, Email, Facebook, etc.. or are you using it to process Quickbooks, ACT CRM, or other resource intensive programs? Do you do hardcore online gaming?

Can we transfer your software licensing?

For example you recently purchased the latest version of Microsoft Office or upgraded Quickbooks. Yes most of the time moving the licensing to a newer computer is simple to do, however at what cost?

What is the cause of the problem?

We will diagnose the issue(s) you are having to try and isolate the issue and determine the best solution.
Is this a virus? Is the Windows XP, Vista, 7 Operating System corrupted beyond repair, or is this a hardware failure?

So by taking the time to assess your problem and how you use your computer, we can make an educated suggestion on if you should fix or replace your computer system.

So what are some common decisions on why I would fix it instead of buying new?

90%+ Success rating for removing a virus without having to re-install your Windows XP, Vista, or 7 operating system.

Many times the computer is running slow because there isn't enough hardware memory. If you own a V8 Pickup truck but your only using the power of a Geo Metro; then a simple upgrade will help improve your system performance.

Hardware capabilities to run the latest software or Windows system is also important. There are many computers that are 3 years old that have at least 2 more years of life in them.

So what are some common decisions on why I would buy a new computer?

Major hardware failure; if we diagnose that the motherboard (brain) has failed. The cost to replace that component alone can be 60-70% the cost of a new computer. Another hardware factor that comes into play is accessibility of replacement parts.

Hard Drive failure; hard drives are mechanical and they fail just like our washer or dryer at home can. We just hope you invested in a backup of your critical business files or family photos to avoid a "clean room" recovery that can be as high as $2000.

Cost, Cost, Cost; in the end it's your checkbook, and while we do also provide sales of computer systems we don't generally stock them. So we can give you advice to purchase one from a local retailer so we know your getting the best value for your $$ if you choose not to have us repair your current system. We can however help transfer the files from your old computer to your new computer.

So the answer isn't quite as simple as one thinks, but just know that if you bring your system to MinnDak Computer Services we will give you the same advice we will give our parents, close friends, or business associates. We want to keep I.T. simple for you and the cost to diagnose your system is almost always free.
